A Legacy Through the Years

The Birth of the Past Pupils’ Association (1930s)

In the early 1930s, inspired by a suggestion from Rev. Fr. Guegen, the Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Church, Bambalapitiya, the foundation was laid for what would become a proud and enduring sisterhood. Rather than adopting the conventional title of an “Old Girls’ Association,” the founders chose the more enduring name “Past Pupils’ Association” — a name that has stood the test of time and remains unchanged to this day.

The Association was officially inaugurated on 17th March 1934, St. Patrick’s Day, marking the beginning of a legacy built on faith, unity, and service.

The Pioneering Leadership

At its inauguration, the Association was led by visionary women who laid a strong and purposeful foundation. Rev. Mother Gonzaga, Superior of the Convent, became the first President, while Rev. Mother Mary of Jesus served as Vice President. Mrs. Hazel Goonetilleke took on the role of the first Secretary, and Mother Antoinette was appointed Treasurer.

From modest beginnings, with only 20 members at its inception, the Association steadily grew into a vibrant and influential body, guided by dedication and Familian spirit.

A Legacy Carved in Stone

Even before its formal inauguration, the devotion of the past pupils was evident. In 1933, when the school Chapel was built, the magnificent Carrara marble altar was generously gifted by the past pupils of that era. In addition, another devoted past pupil donated the tabernacle.

These offerings stand not only as sacred furnishings, but as timeless symbols of gratitude, loyalty, and enduring connection to Alma Mater.

A New Chapter of Lay Leadership

A historic milestone was reached in 1948 when Mrs. Consie Abeywardene was elected as the first lay President of the Association. This marked a significant transition and demonstrated the growing leadership and involvement of past pupils themselves.

Over the decades, many dynamic Presidents have steered the Association with passion and vision. Through their leadership, numerous successful fundraising initiatives were organized — carnivals, bazaars, charity dinners, exhibitions, coffee mornings and evenings, dances, dramas, musical shows, raffle draws, fashion shows, and the much-loved Familian Walks. Each event not only strengthened fellowship but also supported the school and fellow members in meaningful ways.

Transforming the School Community

The impact of the PPA’s dedication is visible across the school’s development. In 1993, the seats for the present school Auditorium were donated from the proceeds of the very first Familian Walk, a landmark fundraising effort.

Over the years, the PPA has made substantial contributions toward upgrading the home science room, enhancing both the Primary and College libraries, improving science laboratories, and supporting numerous other projects and needs of the school.

A Continuing Legacy of Excellence and Elegance

From a small gathering of 20 devoted members to a thriving Association that continues to serve with excellence and elegance, the Past Pupils’ Association stands as a testament to loyalty, leadership, and love for Alma Mater.

For over nine decades, the Familian spirit has remained its guiding light — rooted in faith, strengthened by unity, and driven by service.
